The Juniors have been working hard on learning lots of different fundamental movement skills including kicking, jumping, hopping, landing, balancing and much more.

We have been developing kicking skills. The children worked very hard to keep their balance when standing on one leg and swinging the other. Once we had mastered that, we took turns to aim towards the goal.

We tried our hand at throwing and catching which we were already very good at. We learnt how to hold our hands, how to roll balls, throw underarm and how to correctly throw a chest pass.

We have also been working on striking a ball, first using hockey sticks and then a tennis racket. We practiced by weaving in and out of obstacles, balancing the ball on our rackets and passing between our friends.

Most recently, the children have been learning about the correct techniques for jumping and hopping. They have watched carefully as Ms Mills demonstrated ways to jump higher and were able to identify the techniques themselves. They enjoyed using chalk to mark how high they had jumped and beating their own scores. We have played lots of games to help us improve our jumping and hopping including ‘swimming in the sea’ and ‘musical spot hop’.

Over the past year, the children have shown a keen interest in dancing! When the weather is too wet to go outside we have our PE lesson in the classroom and take the opportunity to use dance as our warm up. The Juniors love this and all get involved with choosing which song to do next. On these days when we can’t get outside, we sometimes do some yoga stories. The Juniors have really progressed at this and are much more aware of their own bodies. They are able to copy even the most complex moves now (like using their feet as a phone) and find the lesson very relaxing and calming.
