The day for our school tour was finally here! This year St. Thomas’ made their way to Shannon River Adventure, Roosky.
When we arrived, we were greeted by an instructor and we were shown to our tent for the day. This where we left our bags and belongings. We enjoyed the first half of our day together as a whole school. The first activity of the day was archery. Everyone was shown how to properly hold a bow and how to release an arrow to shoot a target. Next up was a chance to do some rock climbing. Everyone was kitted out in a harness and then took turns to climb as high as possible on the climbing wall. Afterwards, we enjoyed a quick break.
Our school went head-to-head with another school to complete an obstacle course. This obstacle course was long and challenging and the gave it their all. There were poles to balance on, bars to hop over and crawl under, a net to crawl under, tyres to climb through, barrels to hop over and tunnels to crawl through. The children also completed some abstract puzzles that required lots of team work and communication.
After lunch, the Seniors got kitted out in wetsuits and life jackets and enjoyed some pier jumping and kayaking. The Juniors had an extended lunch break before being given life jackets and helmets and taken to a canoe. Each with their paddles, they had to steer their way out to the lake, guided by the instructors. They then played some games while on the canoe, including swapping seats. When they returned, the Juniors were shown how to light a camp fire and each got a turn to light some wool. Afterwards, they each got to enjoy a roasted marshmallow.
Finally, it was time to return to school. Everyone enjoyed the activity packed day and the children were more than ready for a good night’s sleep.
