This month the Junior Room were off to outer space. In History, the children learned about Neil Armstrong and his team landing on the moon. We also learned about the Sun and stars and even questioned Ms. Mills about the planets in space. We explored the theme through play time and started out in construction building rockets from mag-snaps and wooden blocks, and further went on to use Knex and Lego to build the space station and prison on the moon! In playdough the children made rockets, stars, aliens and a moon with the flag placed on it. The Juniors enjoyed playing in their sensory basins of rice, water beads and moon sand, exploring the space related items, collecting stars and planets, as well as hiding astronauts for each other to find. The children used playdough and match sticks to make star constellations as part of their fine motor activities too. The role play area was set up like a space station and they had their very own rocket! The children went into role as astronauts working in the space station. They were busy researching planets, taking rock samples, flying to the moon, fixing broken parts on the rocket and reporting dangers in space.
The Juniors created some fantastic Art work this month too! They had fun squishing different colours of paint in between greaseproof paper to create a marbled effect. These were later cut into circles to act as planets, which the children then stuck onto black card which they hard swirled chalk on and splattered white paint to create a galaxy sky. They also created a space scene of them in astronaut suits landing on the moon. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about space.
