Autumn arrived in the Junior Room and the children were exploring the signs of Autumn in the school grounds. In S.E.S.E. the children went on a hunt for signs of Autumn and found lots of autumnal leaves, spider webs, pine cones and blackberries. The children also harvested the potatoes which they planted in the spring and brought them home to have for dinner! We studied the birch trees at the front of the school and did leaf and bark rubbings.
With all the colourful leaves falling around school, we decided to use these for some of Art activities. We made some leafy hedgehogs, leaf lanterns and created some Andy Goldsworthy inspired leaf murals. We have loved using nature in our Art this month!
During play time we constructed some homes for the animals that would be beginning to hibernate for the winter. We talked about the animals that would be preparing to hibernate, and homes were made for hedgehogs, squirrels and sheds were built for the farm animals. In playdough spooky creatures were made, spiders, aliens and hedgehogs. Another construction activity saw the children build haunted houses complete with beware signs and spiders. In small world, the children made a leafy forest for the animals and created a drama around the forest.
