What a busy month it has been. Our theme for the month was ‘Myself’ and ‘Houses and Homes’. In S.E.S.E. they discussed their unique self-identities, talked about their different families and family trees and learned about various personality traits. They explored the story of the ‘Three Little Pigs’, explored what houses looked like in the past, learned lots about Irish Farmhouses, observed old household appliances and explored the different types of houses there are.
In Aistear, they made facial expression during Playdough. In Puzzles, pictures of different body parts were hidden in oats, and the children found them to complete the puzzles. In Water Play, the children were giving the babies a bath, undressing, washing, drying and redressing them. Labels with the names of body parts were hidden in the water beads and the children had to locate them and match them to Princess Holly. Houses were built in Construction using a variety of materials, including Lego, large wooden blocks and coloured blocks. The children created a pretend play around the home during Small World. The children looked for furniture hidden in rice and sorted them into the rooms you would expect to find them in the home. In Role Play, the children went into role as family at home. There was lots of cooking, cleaning, washing dishes, preparing meals, looking after babies, and ironing and laundry to be done.
In Art, the children focused on the Drawing strand. They drew individual houses, focused on shape and line and drawing doors and windows with detail. They then painted their drawings using watercolour. In another activity, the children drew terraced housed, again thinking about line and shape in their drawings.
For the past month, the children have been working on the Fundamental Skill of ‘walking’ and completed many ‘Outdoor and Adventure’ activities. They have been orienteering, looking for clues and completing puzzles.
