Easter seemed to arrive very early this year, but after learning all about spring in Aistear for the month of March, the Junior Room were very excited to start some themed activities. To start, the children used eggs, chicks and rabbits to decorate our Easter tree for the classroom. In Art, we took on two projects: using our paper craft skills to cut out pointed ovals in white and pink card to make rabbit ears which the children stuck onto headbands and decorated with colourful flowers. Next, colours were carefully selected to colour in Easter eggs and a rabbit to put in our Easter baskets. The children really enjoyed sticking on flowers to decorate the basket.
Ms. Mills created an Easter Small World tray complete with rabbits, chicks and a pond. The children used their imagination to feed the rabbits fresh carrots from the garden, hatched some little chicks from eggs, let the ducklings splash in the pond and made nests for the animals.
Some of the older children in the Junior Room have been learning about procedural writing and chose to write about making chocolate Easter nests. They discussed different features such as an ingredients list, a method, numbered points and adverbs. Before they embarked on their writing, it seemed only fair that they get to make them first, so they followed their own instructions to melt chocolate, mix in cornflakes, set the cakes and decorate with mini eggs. The children really enjoyed getting to take them home to enjoy with their families and then wrote some excellent procedural writing of their own!
We finished the term with an Easter Tea Party, enjoying chocolate chicks, marshmallow bunnies and cake. Enjoy your Easter break!
