Food Dudes Week ran from 12th to 16th June. Food Dudes is a healthy eating that was developed to encourage children to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables.
Monday through to Friday, the pupils received a different fruit and vegetable to taste, including, apples, bananas, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, carrots, peppers, cucumber and tomatoes. The children discussed smells, textures and tastes and they all did very well at trying each sample every day. There were daily videos to watch, which spoke about; ways to include fruit and vegetables in your lunchbox, growing fruit and vegetables in Ireland, saving seeds from fruit and vegetables to grow more fruit and vegetables and how to use fruit and vegetable peelings to make compost. The Juniors also explored making fruit and vegetables in Playdough during playtime.
As an additional activity, on Friday the whole school got to explore more ways to eat fruit at home, by making our own smoothies, fruit salads and fruit skewers. They children made both mixed berry and tropical fruit smoothies by adding frozen fruit, strawberry or vanilla yoghurt and orange or apple juice to the blender and whizzing it all together. They chose their fruits of choice from bananas, apples, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, pineapple and watermelon to make fruit skewers and fruit salads. They made a fantastic effort and really enjoyed eating lots of fruit.
