For the month of January, the Junior Room were focused on Shape and Space in Maths and specifically explored Spatial Awareness and 2D Shape.

The children were busy bringing Teddy on lots of journeys around the classroom and locating where Teddy was hiding based on instructions given to the children. The also helped Little Red Riding Hood to make her way through the forest to her Granny’s house. They were busy navigating cars through a busy city too, using their new knowledge of directions and spatial awareness. The boys and girls completed some 2D shape animal picture puzzles and had to figure out the directions and positions to place their shapes in order to match the puzzle.

The Juniors explored the circle, triangle, rectangle and square and learned about their properties. Each day the children focused on one particular shape and had to go on a shape hunt and see what 2D Shapes they could identify in their classroom environment. They completed many sorting activities using attribute shapes, sorting according to colour, size and thickness. They were sorting according to one criterion and then progressed on to sorting with two criteria using a Venn Diagram. The Juniors created 2D Shapes on geoboards and pegboards, and used lollipop sticks and pipe cleaners to make 2D Shapes too. The Juniors created Shape Monsters focusing on the 2D Shapes they had learned about, as well as creating beautiful inspired Mondrian art.
