One of the most eagerly awaited days in the school calendar finally arrived! The Junior Room began their day learning what pancake day is about and why it is celebrated. They discussed their favourite toppings to have on their pancakes, and completed a cutting and sticking activity, and then wrote a list explaining the toppings they love. The children had learned about how people celebrate Pancake Day all over the world and one of the activities some people get up to is pancake racing. So of course, the Juniors had to have a pancake race of their own! Thankfully these were not real pancakes as there were a few spillages along the way! We had a lot of fun! In Maths we started to look at time, specifically sequencing. In the afternoon, we looked at the steps we need to take in order to make pancakes. The Juniors were experts at this before Ms. Mills even explained any of the steps – this was a super easy lesson! During play time, the Aistear tray was set up with all the items needed to make pancakes. There were mixing bowls, a sieve, whisks, spatulas, cutlery, plates, frying pans, artificial eggs, pictures of toppings, bananas, strawberries and much more. The children explored all the items on the tray and enjoyed pretending to crack the eggs in to the bowl, sieve the flour, whisk the mixture, fry it on the pan and put toppings on top. They loved this activity. Little did the Juniors realise that when they were pretending to make their own pancakes, Ms. Mills and Lauren were busy setting up for some real pancakes!!

Pancake day wouldn’t be pancake day without some real pancakes! The Junior Room was set up like a pancake parlour. There were pancakes stacked high and an assortment of toppings from the well sought-after Nutella, golden syrup, lemon juice, sugar, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, grapes, chocolate chips, smarties and more. Students from both the Junior and Senior Room, along with staff and teachers enjoyed some delicious pancakes. There may or may not have been a few messy faces and pupils/ teachers in a pancake coma! A big thank you to Lauren, Pauline and Ms. Draper for all the help with set up and serving hungry bellies!
