World Book Day fell on Thursday 3rd March this year, but we decided to celebrate a little later this year as it has been a busy time! On Friday 11th March, the children of St. Thomas’ decked themselves out in some fabulous outfits to celebrate some great characters known to us from some fantastic stories and books. Appearances were made from Mary Poppins, a nurse, a number of students from Hogwarts, Dog Man, the golden ticket from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, the cow that jumped over the moon and Little Miss Giggles. The children also brought their favourite stories in to school with them.
Today was the first day we got to have a whole school assembly in two years, and what better way to celebrate, than for everyone to talk about the character they dressed up as or talk about a book they particularly enjoy.
Ms. Mills organised a storybook themed scavenger hunt throughout the school. They had to follow clues on their task sheet to find stories with particular characters or items in them, as well as find letters attached to the pictures of story books. Once all the letters were found they had to unscramble the letters and use them to find the answer to a story related question. Again, the children were mixed together into teams of three and had to work together to find the clues. The Junior Room particularly loved this as they have not previously experienced working with the Senior pupils before. In the afternoon, the Senior pupils were challenged to a story book quiz and put the bookworms to the test.
In the week leading up to our final celebration of World Book Day, the boys and girls of the Senior Room visited the Juniors everyday and they paired up with a Junior pupil to read them a story. This was not only a lovely reading experience for everyone, but it was very nice to see the pupils in the school integrate and mix with one another again after so long. The Seniors definitely enjoyed being role models and being given responsibility to read to the Juniors, and from the Juniors review, they prefer being read to by the Seniors rather than Ms. Mills!
